William Wilberforce

williamwilberforce.jpgwas a British politician and philanthropist who in 1785 underwent a conversion experience and became an evangelical Christian. Just a couple years later he was made aware of the gross injustice of the British slave trade. He was fully persuaded to take on the cause at enormous personal risk to his reputation carrier and livelihood. I recently did a series on “reputation”. During my studies I came across William Wilberforces name. His name has recently come to the forefront in the movie AMAZING GRACE. I just saw it this week and all the facts I knew about this great man all came together in living color. William Wilberforce is one of my heros because he stood for what he knew was right and was willing to fight for as long as it took, in his case 30 years. He said this “So enormous, so dreadful, so irremediable did the Trade’s wickedness appear that my own mind was completely made up for Abolition. Let the consequences be what they would, I from this time determined that I would never rest until I had effected its abolition.”
This week I want to continue to identify the qualities of a a hero & for William the quality that captivates me is his persistence in the face of resistance. THIRTY YEARS of fighting. THIRTY YEARS of people telling him it couldn’t be done. THIRTY YEARS. When you discover the call of God for your life FIGHT FOR IT. Don’t give in. Don’t give out. Don’t give up. Fight until the dream God placed in your heart becomes a reality in your world
